The Pata Parelli Horse and Riding System

Recently, the topic of natural relations with the horse is becoming increasingly popular. There are many new names, schools and even shows. The name of Pat Parelli is one of the most famous, but do we know about his school other than seven games?

The term “Natural Horsemanship” itself appeared in the eighties to describe the interaction of man and horse, built on an understanding of the natural characteristics of the animal. In fact, there was nothing revolutionary in this: these methods were used for hundreds of years, but only in the twentieth century there was a rapid development of equestrian sport, and as a result, people who lacked the experience and understanding of horse psychology started working with horses. It is not surprising that equestrian sport began to be considered one of the most dangerous sports, although the entire previous history of the interaction of horses and people was not too dramatic. The Pata Parelli Horse and Riding System.
The teachers of Pat Parelli were those people who grew up with horses and spent their whole lives with them, and began to work from five to six years. He managed to systematize their experience and build a training system for people, thanks to which any person with any experience can understand horses, be understandable to them, solve problems of horse behavior and build interaction with horses safely, fun and effectively.
In the processing of knowledge and the construction of the system, a significant role was played by the wife of Pat Parelli – Linda Parelli.
The system has four skill levels. It is worth noting that the Parelli program is aimed more at training a person than training a horse. To master the first two levels of a person, it will take several tens of hours, a horse with an experienced instructor will master everything in an hour or two.
Within the system, there are four specializations, each of which has four skill levels:
In touch (On Line)
Work from the ground on a halter and cord to build relationships and trust.
After mastering the fourth level – work on the longest possible cord, crew management, cord work from the back of another horse, work with several horses.
Overcoming difficult obstacles and challenges on a long cord.
Working on a forty-foot-long cord and demonstrating the horse new, more difficult obstacles and challenges.
Working on twenty-two foot cord, solving various problems and demonstrating new obstacles to the horse’s growth of mirth.
Free Choice (Liberty)
Work from the ground without halter and cord.
After mastering the fourth level – overcoming difficult obstacles (including agility) at large, competitions among supporters of natural relations, circus elements, shows, working with several horses, working at large from the back of another horse.
Changes in legs at a gallop and various obstacle courses in a fenced space.
Work in a round padd without cord and halter.
Work in a round paddock and on twenty-two foot cord.
Improvisation (Free Style)
Teaches the horse and rider balance, relaxation and self-control.
After mastering the fourth level, any pair of Western disciplines, both practical and sports, are available to this pair.
Riding without a bridle, changing legs at a gallop, jumping.
Riding on iron or only with the “Carrot stick”, working out balance and harmony with the horse.
Work under saddle on hakamori for a natural ride and improve balance, landing, control and relaxation.
Fine craftsmanship (Finesse)
Riding on contact is the biggest challenge for the horse and rider. Going beyond everyday tasks and moving to the level of art.
After mastering the fourth level, classic sports are available for this pair.
Leg changes at a gallop assembly, flexion, graceful maneuvering.
Graceful use of occasion, grace, posture and balance, the beginning of the use of the sacrum and the back.
