World Dressage Championship
The 2018 World Dressage Championship among young horses is held annually in three age categories – 5, 6 and 7 years. In these competitions, horses are in the foreground, not their athletes, whose task is to maximally advantageously present the natural abilities of their wards. Among the winners of the World Cup, champions of Europe, the world and the Olympic Games are not often found, the stallions-producers who won this competition clearly demonstrate their athletic inclinations, which they then successfully pass on to their children.
Most of Europe was covered by a wave of unusually intense heat. There has been no good rains since April, the last four weeks the temperature has been at 30 degrees, and in Spain and Portugal the thermometer rises by 40 degrees. In general, the organizers of equestrian tournaments in Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Sweden are not accustomed to such extreme temperatures, and they have to make significant additional efforts in order to ensure comfort, especially for horses. Water mist dust coolers were installed in Ermelo; several taps with free drinking water were installed for spectators along the main arena. In all enclosed spaces, including the press center, air conditioning was turned on. However, by Friday evening the heat calmed down somewhat, and on Saturday clouds appeared in the sky and the wind rose. Of course, the horses were hot, but not a single animal oppressed by heat or sunstroke was seen.
The peak of the heat came on Friday, when in the big arena the competition went from 8 am to 9 pm. It was a preliminary ride for horses of 6 and 7 years old, horses of 5 years started in a preliminary ride on Friday.
The Westphalian Stallion Revolution (Rocky Lee x Rouletto) won a preliminary ride for five-year-old horses under the saddle of Andreas Hellstrand. The stallion made a sensation at the Hannover Kerung in Ferden in 2015, and was acquired by Helstrand for an impressive amount of 1.2 million euros. In Ermelo, the stallion demonstrated complete harmony and controlled energy, which are more innate than trained properties. The audience gave a standing ovation to the couple, and the judges put 9.5 per trot, 8.8 per step, 9.0 per gallop, 8.5 for submission and 9.5 for sports prospects. The total score was 9.06. All participants of all age tests start in the preliminary ride, and then, according to its results, continue the competition in the big or small finals. Usually, 15 best horses are allowed into the big finals, but this year in the standings for the 5-year-old horses Destacado (rider – Matthias Alexander Rat) and Zucchero (rider – Frederic Wanders) finished with the same result 9.04 points, and therefore the number of participants in the big finals increased up to 16 horses.

The competition was attended by 40 horses, and the judges put a total of eight “nine”. One of them deserved Villeneuve for a gallop. The stallion’s owner is Elizabeth (Sissy) Max-Toyrer (Austria), the athlete is Laura Strobel, and the coach is Dorothy Schneider. The pair became well-deserved winners, showing very soft contact, maintaining balance, including on lateral movements, a gallop “uphill” and the right menki.
